Installing ssh on MS Windows

MS Windows does not have a standard way to securely access remote systems. In order to use ssh on MS Windows you have to install it yourself. This page will show you how.

There are many ssh client programs for MS Windows. The one that we are using in the labs can be obtained from SSH Communications Security and is free for academic use.

Prerequisite to installing ssh

Before you install and use ssh on MS Windows make sure that you can login to your account from another machine, such as one in a Computer Science lab. That way you know that your account has been created and that you have the correct initial password. After you change your password try to login with the new password to see that everything is set up okay. If your account doesn't exist, or you have the wrong username, or the wrong password then it doesn't matter if you install ssh correctly, you still won't be able to access your account.

Downloading ssh

You can download the program in a couple of ways:

You will probably have to save it to your disk. Make sure to save it in a folder/directory where you can easily find it.

Installing ssh

Find the program where you downloaded it and run it.

ssh will be installed on your computer. Two icons will be put on your Desktop:

Check that ssh was successfully downloaded and installed by logging into your loki account. Remember that you should have already successfully logged into your account previously to make sure that your account is working and that you know your password.

If you are using a PC outside of the Computer Science Building you will have to use the full name loki.cs.kent.edu
